Bethel Missionary Baptist Church 5140 Carr St Arvada, CO 80002 303-968-7034 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the word; but that the world through him might be saved – John 317 KJ (3).png

The question "What must I do to be saved?" comes directly from the bible in Acts 16:30. A man who is a jailer is asking his prisoners how he can be saved. They answer his question in the very next verse telling him he needs to "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ". It really is that simple.

Acts 16:29-31 - Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. [KJV]

This jailer has recognized that he needs to change his life and asks the people of God how he can be saved. Salvation is a gift that we can't earn or do anything to obtain. We must believe that it is being offered to us and accept it.

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. [KJV]

Think of any gift someone might offer you. It might be something very small and cheap such as a pen. If you refuse to accept it, it's not a gift that you possess. In order to have the gift, you have to take it. Salvation is the same way. God is offering that gift to every person in the world, including You.

To accept the gift of Salvation from God, we acknowledge that he is the One True God and that His Son, Jesus Christ came to this earth, was crucified and rose again after three days.

Romans 10:9 - ...if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [KJV]

Romans 10:13 - ...whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. [KJV]

In order for us to believe fully and accept this gift, we have to recognize that we are all sinners. Every single person that has been born since Adam and Eve sinned are sinners with the exception of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:1 - And you hath he made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins. [KJV]

Until we recognize we are sinners and make a decision to repent or change, we will not be saved.

If you have never been saved, and you want to be, make a decision to change the course of your life today. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and call on Him and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. You don't need to say a special prayer or recite specific words. Humbly ask Him for forgiveness of your sins and accept the gift of Salvation that he offers.

Once you accept the gift of salvation, Baptism is the next step. Going back to the jailer in Acts 16:33 - And he took them the same hour of the night, ... and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. [KJV]

Baptism is a very important step and, if possible, should follow very closely after the gift of Salvation is accepted. In the case of the jailer, he was literally baptized in the same hour he was saved. Without Baptism we do not have the additional gift of the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost which comes to live in us.

John 14:15-17 - If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. [KJV]

This other Comforter, also known as the Spirit of truth, is the same as the Holy Spirit. We are told that the world, or those who haven't been saved and baptized, can't receive this Spirit. Jesus tells his disciples that this Spirit will live in them.

Finally, we see Peter instructing those who are wanting to change their lives on what they should do

Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. [KJV]
